    Overly simple sigs [discussion]

I mean... Now people are starting to just give a sig good colors, establish small depth by blurring the bg and that's it.
Now, don't get offended, but I don't consider that a sig at all.
    Thoughts anyone?

Well, sometimes a certain image looks better simple and clean, rather than being overcrowded with C4Ds and the like. I've personally felt like, "Why should I distort the background? It looks fine as it is, really" with some of my works.
Actually, I think it's being more of a trend now. And I don't mind people moving out of the classical way of making signatures.

The way I see it, it's not art anymore.
You just take a stock give it good colors and woo you're finished. I mean... Even a newbie who has no idea how to download or install brushes could make something like that.

The way I see it, sigs never were art. Just little things under our posts to identify ourselves further than just a name. Kinda like, uhm...a signature?
And if you're saying it's not "art" because it's simple, then you're striking out the entire "minimalism" section of art; art made with the intention of using as few effects as possible to portray an idea or emotion.
Besides, simple might not be YOUR taste. But I personally quite love the clean simplicity of such images, and it's quite well loved in the professional world of GFX. (And I don't mean "pro" sig makers, I mean the pro category which earn money doing something a bit more substantial, like logos, layouts and advertisement campaigns.) After all, how many colours does the McDondald's logo use? 1, Yellow and 2, red. Site layouts are praised when they're clean and simple, not cluttered and chaotic.
To be honest, I think it can be much harder to make a good image using as few effects as you can, but the result often looks just as good as- if not better than- a visual overload of pretty swirls and sparkles.
But hey, that's my opinion. ^__^

Well I get what Demoneyes is talking about, but I agree somewhat with Skatz. When you just get a stock and add JUST adjustment layers like, levels and gradient maps, call it done, and post it up for CNC. What can you say to them to improve? If you're just gonna post it under your posts, I'm thinking nobody will mind, but posting it up for CNC. Why bother?

Even if something is executed very simply, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. That's what the CnC is for.
And a simple signature can be art, if you must insist on signatures being art. Say you slightly modify a stock, and get a nice-looking result. That's good. Now say you create something completely from scratch ... original character design and everything ... and use it as a signature. It could look just as good, and just as simple. It's another nice result, but the person has put in more work. In that case you're not going to deny that it's art, are you?
A lot of times people feel like something is art just because they put in a lot of effects and all. But really, unless you know what you're doing, you're just ruining a good piece. Art is defined by the result, not how many random things you put in. If you keep adding more and more stuff, eventually you lose the focal point, depth, lighting, a nice outcome ... everything that mattered to begin with.

My sigs tend to get overcrowded, i guess that's part of my style. but i've got nothing against a simple and nice sig. simple doesn't always mean unprofessional.
But it could be a trend, just like vector sigs were (not a lot of people make those things anymore) or big borders (the border evolution: 1px border, no border, big border).
Personally, i've got nothing against simple sigs, as long as i know there has been put effort in it. I agree with DE on that, simple sigs can be hard as well.

Like what DE said. A signature is what it is...a signature. Like a graffiti artists have tags to tag their work, people use signatures as like a 'calling card'.

On the subject of it being art.
I'm rather fond the minimalist style sigs.
You may not feel graffiti to be art, but to other people. It is. Being simple doesn't always necessarily mean that the artist/designer didn't put alot of work into it.
These are just my opinions and thoughts [and i gave them as they were asked for] so don't go raging war or w/e people do on other forums.
Thank You for your time happy.gif

Like most of the people have already said. Simple makes it look nice already. But then, I know how you feel. It is because I've been told by my "sensei" all the time to keep it simple but I always love to have tons of stuff even if it is a little signature. It is just me I guess. But it also depends on the person view points. So if it isn't art to you, maybe different to someone else's eyes right?
I mean, keeping things simple does mean you just change the color and add a little edit to a render. It means to keep it simple but at the same time allow people to enjoy your work, plus make it turn from 2D to 3D. Sorry if none of this made much sense ^^" But that is how I see it.

well in my opinion they can look better either way simple or chaotic depends on how u do it i guess

IMO I really like the simplicity of signatures. If it's simple but turn out to be nice or even a superb work, y not accept it. It's like Demoneyes said about the real graphic design world, everything looks really simple but effective.
ps. I love McDondald's logo XD

This is very common usually a gradient bg with a couple c4d's layed over it on color dodge or something that line with a render over it add a gaussian blue to the whole applied image erase some of the areas near the focal and BAM! add some text and you got a decent looking sig it doesnt matter how good it looks we can all tell if you put work into it especially if there is visible effects that stand out like clips and layer masks these people arent gonna get any better until they understand that taking more than 30 mins to an hour on a sig just isnt gonna cut it forever

I have no problems with simple signatures if they work.  What irks me is when they're simple and have around 1 color.  Sometimes, it works, but most of the time monochrome isn't very interesting.
It's even worse when they have a huge amount of negative space.
It isn't the concept, but how it's being executed, that bothers me.
Edit to the poster above:  Sometimes becoming more proficient in something is learning how to do the same thing in a shorter amount of steps.  Time and quality are not proportionate.

Personally I think you have gotten so use to sig making you initially feel that anything simple doesn't suit or unworthy of a signature.
A simple crop is as good as a highly CGed signatures with all those C4D on it. I don't use C4D because I feel it doesn't shows a artist true skill. But of course anyone can come back and say, art is art, C4D art is just another form, and I'll just say, mine is like that too.
Overly simple sig, i'm sure anyone can agree with me on this and I highly support what Kurono Kurumu said about signatures, in which they represent the likes and personalities of that users. Just like tastes, everyone's is different happy.gif
The current on i'm using is an old one, and I don't wanna go and improve upon it ^^
